According to Digitimes, some component suppliers in Taiwan said that Sony is preparing to enter low-end smartphone market under $200. Sony has launched Xperia Tipo in 2012 and will launch other smartphones in the first quarter of 2013.
For this time, Sony has ordered Foxconn to produce Xperia Tipo. Two other companies, Compal and Arima, are ordered to assemble low-end Android smartphones in 2013.
This decision is taken by Sony because it has found appropriate products for this segment. Sony plans to sell million cellphones under $200, but Taiwan assemblers warn Sony that the shipment may be lower than Sony’s expectation because of an overlapping product portfolio and confusing marketing efforts.
