Mobile phone market around the world grows about 4% from year to year and recently the growth was slowing down in Q1 2013. In the first quarter of 2013, smartphone shipments ahead of mobile phone shipments for the first time.
Data from International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker stated that mobile phone vendors ships 418.6 million units of mobile phones, increased from the same quarter last year with a total shipments of 402.3 million units. Although there was a slight increase from the same period, actually mobile phone shipments decreased from Q4 2013, when the vendors managed to ship 483.2 unit of mobile phones around the world.
In smartphone market, vendors managed to ship 216.2 million smartphones in Q1 2013. In that quarter, smartphone market surpassed mobile phone market for the first time. About 51.6% of all mobile phone shipped on previous quarter were a smartphone. It means that smartphone market share increased 41.6% compared to same quarter last year. However, smartphone shipments in Q4 2013 bigger than Q1 2013 with a total shipment number of 227.8 million.
Kevin Restivo, Senior Analyst at IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, said that mobile phone users want to have computer inside their pocket.
From the data about smartphone shipments in Q1 2013, you can see that Samsung still on the top with total shipments of 70.7 million units or 32.7% of market share. Apple was on the second place with 17.3% of market share, followed by LG on the third place, Huawei, and ZTE.
